Chapter Thirteen

I had been nervous before dawn. By noon I was beginning to feel a terror welling up in me making me feel quite sick. By evening I was pacing and shivering and felt a mess. Milli, Helin and Judi had entertained the three men that morning while I had sat out of the way. By the sound of things, they had enjoyed themselves more than usual. Maybe it was the freedom and change of surroundings, or maybe it was just that these were young men who had more energy and imagination than the old wrecks we were used to. Shortly after they had all satisfied their lust, the men disappeared saying they had to get supplies aboard and see the ship got maintained. They promised they would return after dark unless the captain decided to leave early, in which case they would come for us.

It had been dark for nearly an hour and I was peering around the side of the curtains down to the street below, which was brightly lit. There was no sign of the men amid the crowds that seemed to be milling past. I could see no reason for so many people to be here. Surely they weren't all shippies?

Most of the throng was walking in the road, as very few vehicles seemed to use it. Cars had been so rare in the half-hour or so that I had been watching that I was quite surprised to see one, so surprised in fact, that it didn't dawn on me that it was a police car for several seconds. I flinched back from the window as soon as I realised what it was.

"What's up?" Asked Judi, having noticed my jerk.

"Police!" I rasped, not daring to speak aloud.

The other three were suddenly at my side, peering around the edges of the curtain, as the blue and white car slowly manouvered between the crowds of people.

"Do you think they're looking for us?" Asked Milli, whispering as I had done.

"How should we know?" Countered Judi.

The car stopped and a uniformed cop leaned out of the window and talked to a group of men.

"He's showing them photographs," noticed Helin. "It must be us they're looking for."

"No. It's more likely to be Melani. I think they'd look for her first and us second," I answered with some logic.

"Unless they've already got Melani," ventured Helin with equal logic.

We swapped glances, nervously.

"What should we do?" Asked Judi.

"Nothing," I stated. "Keep an eye on them and if they stop our men or look toward this building then we'll get out. Otherwise there's no need to panic."

I just wished I felt the confidence that my words suggested.

No sooner had I spoken than Milli gasped and pointed to the three men who had promised us a lift. They were walking down the street toward the cop and us. We watched silently as they looked over the police car, trying to see what all the interest was about. Then one of them looked up and spotted us in the window and waved.
